Dr. Cheong completed his undergraduate training at the National University of Singapore in 1983 and went on to train as a General Surgeon. He became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1989 and was awarded the Health Manpower Development Program scholarship in 1992 to do subspecialty training in Colorectal Surgery. He completed his subspecialty training as an overseas fellow at the Department of Colorectal Surgery, Cleveland Clinic Florida in 1993 under Dr Steven Wexner.

On returning to Singapore, Dr Cheong was appointed consultant surgeon in 1995 and was subsequently promoted to senior consultant at the Department of General Surgery, Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) in 2001. During his time at TTSH he served as head of Colorectal unit and Surgical director of the Digestive Disease Centre. He has also visiting consultant appointments with KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, John Hopkins Singapore and the National Cancer Centre, Singapore.

Dr. Cheong was responsible for developing Medical and Radiation Oncology services in TTSH and pioneered the development of laparoscopic (keyhole) colorectal surgery in the hospital. He is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate training as a Senior Clinical Lecturer with the NUS School of Medicine and was a member of the earthquake relief team to Turkey in 1999.
